IN A FLASH Is Open For December Submissions!
From December 1-15, please submit flash nonfiction on the theme of RHYTHM.
We’re Open!
Our December submissions call is OPEN! From December 1-15, please submit flash nonfiction (500 words or fewer) on the theme of RHYTHM. Full guidelines are here, and please read them carefully. After receiving some insightful questions from thoughtful readers, we added a few clarifications.
We are SO EXCITED: our first author-featured issue will be published in January, and it’s going to be incredible. As a reminder, each issue will include one piece of excellent flash nonfiction accompanied by editorial praise and a Q&A with the author. Thank you to everyone who submitted to our first two submission calls, STILL and BODY; we’ve read some wonderful work and wish we could accept more!
Please subscribe now so you don’t miss our first author-featured issue, and share this post with a friend who might like to read or contribute.
Writing Prompts
If you’re feeling stuck on the theme of RHYTHM, here are a few prompts to get you started:
Write about the next sound you hear. Go deep inside it. What does the sound have to teach you?
Craft a piece where music serves as a metaphor for deeply-buried emotions.
Use the simple lyrics of a popular holiday song (such as “Jingle Bells” or “Let it Snow”) as jumping-off points for a personal story.
Write about a sensory experience using rhyming words.
Tell a memory about a time you communicated only through music.
Upcoming Themes
From December 1-15, please submit pieces on the theme of RHYTHM.
From January 1-15, please submit pieces on the theme of DREAMS.
From February 1-15, please submit pieces on the theme of GROWTH.

Casey’s powerful hermit crab essay, Help Wanted: Pre-Emptive Griever, was recently published in Hippocampus Magazine. (This piece was workshopped by The Flashies, and we’re always extra-proud when one of our own gets published!)
Leanne’s piece of flash CNF, The Band Room, will be included in the upcoming ten-year anniversary anthology for Read650. You can watch the video of Leanne reading the piece live at Lincoln Center here.
Keep reading, writing and subscribing! We can’t wait to read your work.
Cheers,
The IN A FLASH Editors
Leanne… I loved watching you recite The Band Room… so much power in your story and how you shared it! Thank you!
